Culture Chest is a new subscription box service that introduces children to different cultures every month.  Each box contains 1-2 diverse picture books based on a common theme like music or food and an activity such as a craft or recipe to do together.  Board books are available for ages 0-2 and picture books for ages 3-8.

September’s culture box theme was music and dancing.  Here’s a peek at what was inside.

It’s like unwrapping a present!  The excitement builds as you wonder what awaits you.
We were so excited to find two books to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15 in the U.S.).  My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, Mambo King are bilingual books written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Rafael Lopez.  Both books are recipients of a Pura Belpré Illustrator Honor Award and it’s easy to see why.  The illustrations are bright and beautiful – just like the culture!
The biographical storybooks share common themes of individuals pursuing their dreams, overcoming obstacles, and sharing their love of music and dance with the world.  The books offer the opportunity to explore language, geography (Cuba, New York City, Miami, Spanish Harlem) and Latin music and dancing (mambo, rumba, cha-cha, salsa).
The activity for this Culture Chest was making a shoe box guitar.  The direction card lists the materials needed and the instructions.

The Culture Chest theme for October is Asian foods – sharing two stories about the influence of food in two Asian cultures. Hint: One story is about the popular Filippino food, Pancit!
